Notices from Judges regarding FEI Guidelines

The Equestrian Canada Rules for Vaulting in Canada state in Article L301 that: "The criteria for scoring is explained in detail in the FEI Guidelines for Vaulting Judges which is published annually on the FEI Vaulting Website." The notices posted here are supplemental to the FEI Guidelines for cases where the FEI Guidelines do not cover specifics needed in the context of the Canadian rules and/or competition systems.

These notices are written by the Canadian judges during their meetings as they discuss how to apply the FEI Guidelines to Canada. These notices are informative only so that competition organizers, coaches, and competitors are aware of how the judges are handling these situations. It is at the discretion of VaultCanada to decide if any of these require further discussion and/or should be adopted as part of the rules or the competition policies document.

Example for Average System

Judges may use the call out as shown in the FEI Average system, and then calculate the Performance score and the DOD score (when applicable) at the judges stand. The example call out provided in the FEI Guidelines is as follows:

D 3 E 2 R 8 2 D 2 D 3 M 1 D 5 (F 1,0) 3 D D 2 (F 2,0) E D R 5 D M 3 M 2 (F 0,4)

Optionally, judges may use the following computer friendly call out system which will be entered into the scoring system as is:

D3 E2 R8 X2 D2 DNH3 M1 D5 F1 X3 D0 D2 F2 E0 D0 R5 D0 M3 / M2 F0.4

The above differs from the FEI as follows:

  • Deductions for specific exercises are pared with the DOD letter of that exercise
  • Deductions for non-DOD exercises are indicated with the letter X instead of just listing the number
  • Exercises that are not held have the letters NH after the DOD letter and before the number for the deductions
  • Fall are simply indicated by the letter F, not circled
  • The / character is used to indicate when the bell rang. This must be called by the judge to ensure it is in the correct position, not simply added by the scribe as the bell rings.

Competition organizers may, at their discretion and with proper training, convert call outs in the FEI format to the computer friendly format.
